Leadership Development Sessions

What does high-stakes hostage and crisis negotiations have to do with business within an AGC Georgia member company?  We are all in a relationship-based business.  People matter.  And, how we communicate and negotiate with these individuals determines our success. In both cases, a lot of people are counting on us to communicate well under pressure!

Dan Oblinger is a consulting negotiator.  With 21 years of law enforcement experience, 14 years of service as a crisis and hostage negotiator, and 15 years experience consulting with the commercial construction industry, Dan is uniquely positioned to take us on a tour of highly effective communication habits and strategies. He works with firms to build cultures of active listening and negotiation.  Dan is no stranger to AGC Georgia. We are bringing him back by popular demand! His previous engagements were met with rave reviews.

We are excited for Dan to share three completely new experiences with us that will have practical and powerful impacts on our individual growth so we can nurture each of our organization's culture.

SESSION 1
From Red to Black: The Two Conversations We Master to Preserve Profitability for Construction Projects

Where did all the money go?  Project delivery in 2023 has challenging elements.  Supply chains, labor challenges, coordination of resources, and uncertainty in the economic and political arena have affected contractors and clients alike.

Dan will provide the principles and frameworks necessary to manage two critical conversations with clients: the negotiation of change orders and supplementals, and the recovery of accounts receivable that have severely aged!  Using proven methods adopted and modified from the world of hostage negotiation, you will use relationship-based negotiation to move projects out of the "red" and into the "black" all while preserving the relationship with your client.  Bring your hard hat because we will be doing some work!

SESSION 2
Chief Listening and Negotiation Officer: How to Build a World-Class Communication Culture

Do you identify communication as a corporate value?  Do you want a team of excellent communicators in all sorts of corporate situations?  Then invest some time to examine best practices in corporate communication culture.

Bring your worst case scenarios and see how a comprehensive, cultural approach to communication excellence can solve the nastiest problems in the construction industry.  This session is about planning and cultural improvement.  Learn what innovative companies are already doing to reduce confusion, retain talent, boost revenue, and capture the most valuable commodity for executives and leaders: strategic clarity.
