AGC Georgia Annual Convention

Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa
June 7-10, 2018

Guest Speaker
presented by

During the recent AGC of America Convention, Lt. General Russel L. Honoré delivered a captivating keynote address. After rave reviews from the national audience, AGC Georgia is bringing him to our convention! It's fitting that such an accomplished and respected person like Gen. Honoré will serve as our first speaker at our annual Awards Breakfast. You'll remember him from his time serving as the commander of Joint Task Force Katrina. With his striking leadership style, he became known as the "Category 5 General." He's authentic and uplifting, and delivers a bracing dose of candor in his talks with real-world leadership lessons that equip audiences with a preparedness mindset. Make the effort to see him speak at our convention. His presence is inspiring and his stories are incredible. Both business registrants and their spouse/guest are encouraged to participate in Saturday morning's Awards Breakfast. Registration is required for spouses/guests.

Welcome from AGC Georgia President, Scott Clark

After several years of fun in the sun on the Atlantic Coast, this year we are back on the white, sandy beaches of the Gulf. I'm looking forward to a great convention and hope you and your family and colleagues will make plans to join us.

Our golf tournament always gets us started, and this year it will take place at 9:00 am on Thursday, June 7. Make sure you plan your arrival for Wednesday if you plan to play in the tournament. Later on Thursday, we'll reconvene for our Welcome Reception and Dinner. All members and their families are invited, we'll even have dedicated children's activities available. It's going to be casual and FUN!

With the new Executive Alliance (EA) getting underway this February, I'm excited to have a new group of members participating in our convention. For the benefit of our industry's and association's future, it's critical for AGC Georgia to dedicate resources to help mid-level managers and those on path to company stewardship find the professional development opportunities needed to hone their leadership skills. It will be nice to have our up-and-coming stars from the Young Leadership Program (YLP), alongside our new EA members and seasoned business owners. This makes for excellent conversation and sharing of best practices.

All business registrants are invited to gather on Friday morning for our Annual Meeting, complete with keynote presentations from AGC of America CEO, Steve Sandherr and President, Eddie Stewart. Eddie is a Georgia Tech alumnus and was installed as AGC of America President on February 28, 2018. He is president of Caddell Construction Company, an AGC Georgia member firm.

On Friday, everyone is invited to the Beach Bash sponsored by CompTrust AGC Mutual Captive Insurance Company. This evening will be open for attendees to explore the area on their own for dinner. Those enrolled in the YLP and EA have an opportunity to gather with their peers for a hosted dinner at the resort.

On Saturday morning, we'll host our award ceremony and recognize the best of the best construction projects built by our member contractors and present corporate safety awards. The Annual Dinner closes the convention in eloquent style on Saturday evening. The 2018 Skill, Integrity and Responsibility (SIR) Award is presented at this program and the new officers and board members are installed. This year, I have the special privilege of presenting the SIR Award to Charlie Garbutt, Chairman of the Board for Garbutt Construction Co. and passing the gavel to Kevin Kuntz, President of the Southeast Division of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.

Immediately following the business of our closing dinner, please plan to join us for a rip-roaring fun After Party!  This will be a great way to close out what's shaping up to be a fantastic convention! Can't wait to see you and your family on the coast!

SIR Award Recipient - Charlie Garbutt

This award is the highest honor given to a deserving individual each year at the Annual Convention in June. The SIR Award recipient exemplifies these values embraced by the AGC organization and has consistently demonstrated outstanding service, industry leadership, and involvement in the community.

On June 9, 2018, Charlie Garbutt, chairman of the board for Garbutt Construction Company in Dublin, will receive the 2018 AGC Georgia SIR Award. The award recognizes Mr. Garbutt’s outstanding service, leadership and involvement in the construction community during his distinguished career which continues to exemplify Skill, Integrity and Responsibility.

Charlie Garbutt is a visionary in the construction industry with over forty-five years’ experience building, renovating, and preserving structures. Charlie graduated in 1972 from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in building science. Charlie founded Garbutt Construction Company in September 1976 in his hometown of Dublin, Georgia, and has led it continuously ever since.

Launched in 1976, Garbutt Construction fulfilled Charles E. “Charlie” Garbutt’s life-long goal of starting his own company having come from a long line of small business owners in the Dublin community. Although he had no interest in following in his father’s footsteps as a drugstore owner, Charlie demonstrated at a young age a passion and knack for design which led him to pursue an architecture career. Taking his father’s advice to learn the tangible side of the business, Charlie took summer jobs in construction where he came to appreciate the hands-on nature of the job. Charlie explains that working in construction is akin to cutting grass, you can very clearly see the proof of your labor.

This experience drove him to alter his career path in favor of construction management. With degree in hand, Charlie joined JG Lockard Construction Company, an Alabama AGC General Contractor. Starting in the field, he worked his way up to project manager, overseeing all field operations, before moving back to Dublin to lay the groundwork for his own company.

So what has this journey been like thus far for Charlie Garbutt—he sums it up this way: “challenging but rewarding.” He is quick to add “it is not as much about me and what I’ve done as much as it is about the others who I have worked with alongside of me in a collaborative way as we’ve taken this journey together.”

Jennifer Clark Hosts Ladies' Brunch

Girl Waits with Gun, presented by Amy Stewart

Jennifer Clark, wife of AGC Georgia's 2017-18 President Scott Clark, is hosting a Ladies' Brunch on Friday, June 8.

All ladies (either AGC Georgia member firm executives or those attending convention as a spouse/partner of industry professional) are invited to this gathering.

Amy Stewart is the New York Times best-selling author of nine books, including Girl Waits with Gun and the rest of the Kopp Sisters series, which are based on the true story of one of America’s first female deputy sheriffs and her two rambunctious sisters. Her popular nonfiction titles include The Drunken Botanist, Wicked Plants, and Flower Confidential.

She lives in Portland with her husband Scott Brown, a rare book dealer. They own an independent bookstore called Eureka Books, which is so independent that it lives in California while they live in Oregon.

This year's Ladies' Brunch is sponsored by The Hartford.

The After Party

Immediately after adjourning from our closing dinner on Saturday evening, all guests are invited to The After Party, sponsored by Harrison Contracting Company, Inc. The highly-recommended and local band, Kickstand Jenny, will help us close out the weekend by playing all your favorite covers.

The AGC Georgia Kids and Teens Clubs run through 10:00 pm, so leave the children in great hands and plan to continue the party with your fellow AGC Georgia members.
