(After feedback from attendees of previous sessions, we took the recommendation to divide this full day course into two half-day sessions. This now allows participants an opportunity to put instruction from the first session into practice and bring questions with them to the second session and receive instructor feedback, recommendations, etc.)

Human Performance is the most well-respected operating philosophy for safety management and incident analysis. Human error and at-risk behavior are often identified as they cause of many accidents. However, human error is most often a symptom of deeper issues within the safety management system.

Many individuals are placed in safety management roles without exposure and development in advanced safety management principles. Regulatory compliance and rule-based safety management can only take you so far. A deep understanding of Human Performance principles is essential to managing safety effectively.

This course will provide you with an understanding of the new view of safety performance and its history. Understanding human error requires us to understand the system and leadership issues from the view of the worker. Once equipped with a deeper understanding of our systems, we can create better defenses that reduce error or make it safer to fail.

What you will learn:

  • Brain centered hazards and error rates based on type of work performed
  • How culture and leadership influence individual behavior
  • How to understand the underlying factors that increase the likelihood of incidents
  • Determining the difference between human error, system induced error, and intentional violations.

To improve safety performance, we must provide our team with the best safety science available. This course is designed as an introduction to the concepts.
