Navy Seal Jon Moore, his wife Jennifer and their daughter Heaven.
|
After months of hundreds of volunteer man-hours and thousands of dollars of donated materials, the Young Leadership Program's (YLP) largest charitable works project is finally complete! In early spring, representatives from Operation Home Front connected members of the YLP Council with Navy veteran Jonathon "Jon" Moore who was injured in combat and suffers from brain and spinal injury complications, including amputation of his right leg.
Due to the split-level layout of his home, Jon could only easily access his living room. This virtual confinement severely limited his quality of life and constituted a need for a renovation of his home. The YLP was proud to step in and help. Over several months and with the help of many volunteers, they successfully renovated and retrofitted the interior and exterior of his home.
Some of the highlights of the construction process included working with Operation Home Front and federal officials from Senator Johnny Isakson's office and the Veterans' Administration to secure a donation of an exterior lift to help Jon gain entry to his home from his driveway. A canopy was installed from his parking area to the lift to allow him safer access during inclement weather. Carpets were removed and hardwoods installed for easier wheelchair access. His master bath was renovated to allow handicap access in his shower and at his vanity.
A few projects were completed in their yard such as a new fence and new landscaping, both of which had been started by Jon's wife, Jennifer, but remained incomplete due to the level of care she needed to give to her husband.
The Moore's have expressed their sincere gratitude to the YLP for taking on this project. They were able to connect with representatives who had a "hands-on" role in the construction process, but had yet to meet the majority of the members of the YLP who helped raised the sponsorship dollars for the May 2009 Charity Golf Tournament which ultimately paid for aspects of the renovation that were not donated.
Their opportunity to say thank you came on December 4, 2009 during the YLP Holiday Luncheon in Atlanta. But as they expressed their appreciation, they were told the YLP work wasn't quite over. Due to such a large volume of material and man-hour donations, the YLP had enough money remaining from proceeds of the spring golf tournament to pay the Moore's mortgage payments for all of 2010. There wasn't a dry eye at the Holiday Luncheon; the Moore's were speechless! (View video airing on WSB-TV Channel 2 on December 4, 2009)
This final act of kindness offers Jon and Jennifer the ability to return to school and gain the training and education they need to re-start their lives. They have been so focused on helping Jon get better since suffering injuries while protecting our country's freedom that they haven't had time or resources to look to the future and begin planning their path.
