The Safety and Health Committee in 1993 met in the Board Room at AGC's old offices located at 147 Harris Street, downtown Atlanta, and developed a safety day conference as charged by the Georgia Branch, AGC President Jerry Anderson, Anderson Construction Company of Ft. Gaines. In February 1994, the first Georgia Branch, AGC Safety Day Conference was launched at Southern Tech, now known as Southern Polytechnic State University, located in Marietta, Ga. The Safety and Health Committee met following the conference and made the recommendation to implement the 1995 conference with a special recognition program recognizing job-site supervisors for their outstanding contributions to safety on their job sites during a calendar year. The Safety and Health Committee has implemented the largest event the Branch has ever hosted along with its distinguished Annual Supervisors Safety Awards Program.
In the fall of 1994, Dave O'Haren, Holder Construction Company - Atlanta, volunteered along with David Jollay, O. L. Jollay, Inc. - Avondale Estates, to develop the safety awards criteria for the Georgia Branch. The minutes from the earlier meetings reflect the criteria as follows:
- The awards will be based on safety incidence rates for individual supervisors of member firms in the same risk category or in the same trade.
The Safety and Health Committee approved the criteria and designated man-hours differentiating the award levels.
The Georgia Branch, AGC Safety and Health Committee takes pride in honoring the job-site supervisors for their safety endeavors for the previous year. The awards are presented at an Annual Safety Day as a way of honoring the deserving field personnel before the chapter's membership.
