A Personal Invitation by Dan Baker
Dan Baker, P.E., President
Duffey Southeast, Inc.
Take some time out of your daily grind and plan to join us at this year's Annual Convention in Hilton Head. You don't want to be anywhere else!
Based on my previous experience attending the Annual Convention, programs offered will help us plan for the future, and be better business leaders and industry supporters.
There is something for everyone at this year's convention! You'll be impressed with the high-quality social and networking opportunities mixed in with informative business programs and sports outings for you and your family to enjoy.
For the first-time convention attendees, I'm sure you'll be impressed. For those of you who are regular attendees, we are looking forward to seeing you again! Now more than ever it's important to stay connected to our industry and a great way to do that is by attending the AGC Georgia's Annual Convention!
I look forward to seeing you on the coast!
Networking & Relationship Building Opportunities
The Annual convention begins with Sunday's Welcome Reception, complete with food, music and fun for the whole family! All attendees are invited to gather at 6:00 pm in their shorts and sandals for a casual party! This is a great time to greet fellow members to renew business relationships and make new contacts.
The Young Leadership Program (YLP) is a vital part of AGC Georgia’s future success and talented members of this group will lead the association in years to come. For this reason, chapter leaders seek ways to involve the YLP in many events and discussions to gain a fresh perspective. Current YLP members and their spouses/guests are invited to the Young Leadership Program Dinner on Monday evening. Children are welcome to the dinner, or you can choose to register them for the evening’s Kids’ Club.
Additional social opportunities for members to network are planned for Tuesday evening. The Reception & Closing Dinner bring the convention to an end in eloquent style. The 2010 Skill, Integrity and Responsibility (SIR) Award is presented and new officers and board members are installed.
The Monday morning Business Session opens with remarks from Steve Sandherr, CEO of AGC of America. Steve plans to share with us many of the new rules and regulations implemented at the federal level by the Obama Administration that are adding new paperwork and headaches to the daily construction business world.
We'll also hear from AGC of America's Chief Economist Ken Simonson. While Ken is often accused of leaving his ray of sunshine at home when he's presenting these days, what he does bring is timely, important data that helps plot the next turn in the slow economic recovery of the commercial construction industry. His reports are vital to planning future months at your company and helping your key owner clients understand the current state of materials pricing.
Immediately following the morning Business Session will be two sets of hour long break out sessions. Each attendee can choose from three programs each hour. For a complete list of the program titles, please click here.
Recognition & Chapter Leadership
A highlight of each Annual Convention is the Awards Breakfast. This year's program is on the morning of Tuesday, June 8, and winners of the Build Georgia Awards Program will be revealed! Members are also recognized for their achievements in the AGC Georgia and AGC of America safety programs. For the many general and specialty contractor members who choose CompTrust AGC MCIC as their workers' compensation carrier, they can look forward to receiving their share of the recently declared $1.25 million dividend for the 2009 program year during the Awards Breakfast.
On the final night of convention at the Annual Dinner, Dan Baker passes the AGC Georgia President's gavel to Gary Newell, President of Collins & Company a commercial general contractor and construction management firm founded in 1965. Collins & Company is located in Smyrna, and builds retail, medical, private institutional, recreational, and industrial projects.
Gary is extremely involved in AGC at the local and national level. For three years, he served as Chairman of AGC of America's Electronic Information Systems (EIS) Committee helping implement the Internet Plan Room and the creation of AGC xML schemas to increase interoperability and productivity in the construction industry. At the end of his term, he was awarded AGC’s highest honor, Chairman of the Year.
On a local level, Gary is involved in the Chapter's Technology Committee, having chaired the committee for several terms in recent years. He's served on the Chapter's Board of Directors and has been a member of the Chapter's Executive Committee serving as Treasurer and Vice President during the past three years.
2010 SIR Award Presentation
The Skill, Integrity and Responsibility (SIR) Award is reserved for someone who has made a substantial contribution, while honorably serving the construction industry and exemplifying Skill, Integrity and Responsibility in his or her endeavors. AGC Georgia invites you to join President Dan Baker, P.E. as he presents Mr. Presley Daniel "Dan" Yates, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Yates Insurance Agency, Inc. with the Chapter’s 2010 SIR Award.
Mr. Yates was born in 1918 in Atlanta. He grew up on the East Lake Country Club golf course where he tagged along with his brother Charles and the great Bobby Jones when he could. He attended Boys High in Atlanta, and then attended Georgia Tech where he was captain of the golf team for three years. His golf victories are many and in 1939, while at Georgia Tech, he won the Georgia State Amateur Championship at Sea Island, Georgia. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1941 and in 1942 joined the U.S. Army where he served four years.
In 1949 he and his brother, Alan Yates, Sr., founded Yates Insurance Agency and began to sell to Georgia contractors. Yates Insurance Agency became a leader in specialty insurance and bonds for the construction industry. Mr. Dan Yates said, “We are going to look after our clients and prospects needs like they are our own, and our goal each day is to do our best.”
Mr. Yates was one of the founders of the Atlanta Country Club. He has served as Director of the Georgia State Golf Association and the Georgia State Golf Association Foundation. He worked as a volunteer at The Masters Golf Tournament for over 50 years. In 1996 he was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.
Today, Mr. Yates continues to work every day representing his insured’s and fostering the many relationships he has formed in his business over the years.
